The 2008 Langhe Larigi (Barbera) comes across as delicate, understated and feminine. Although the 2008 was quite promising when I first tasted it from barrel, it has since lost some of its mid-palate juiciness. Today I don’t see the depth and richness of the best years. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2023.

The 2008 La Villa benefits from the tannins and length of the Nebbiolo, which compensates for the lack of fruit from the Barbera in this vintage. The 2008 isn’t a huge or complex La Villa, but it does show excellent balance and should drink for a number of years based on its structure and freshness. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2020.

The 2007 Langhe Larigi (Barbera) is a pretty, layered Barbera laced with perfumed fruit. The wine shows superb balance in a medium-bodied style framed by silky, elegant tannins. The 2007 is shaping up to be another terrific Larigi in the style of the 2001 and 2004. After having tasted every vintage of this wine back to 1985 earlier this year (see my article on www.erobertparker.com) it is clear Larigi is among the very finest Barberas made in Piedmont today. The 2007 can be enjoyed upon release but it will be better in another few years and should drink splendidly to age 20 and likely beyond. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027.

The 2007 Langhe La Villa (Barbera/Nebbiolo) is a seriously compelling and utterly delicious wine. The Nebbiolo complements the juicy Barbera fruit by adding a touch of verve, freshness and aromatic complexity that gives the wine an extra level of focus over the Larigi in this vintage. The 2007 La Villa is harmonious and impeccably balanced all the way through to the long finish. Simply put, this is a spellbinding wine from Altare. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027.

I haven’t always been a huge fan of the Langhe La Villa (60% Barbera and 40% Nebbiolo) but the 2005 is one of those rare vintages where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Dark cherries, plums, flowers and sweet licorice all flow from this supple, beautifully proportioned wine. Fine, elegant tannins round out the long finish. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2020.
