The 1999 Sociando-Mallet is an unusually structured, extracted wine in this generally rather forward vintage. Offering up aromas of cassis, cherries and loamy soil, framed by a discreet patina from its élevage in barrel, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and nicely concentrated, with ripe acids and rich tannins that still assert themselves on the finish. This is one 1999 that still amply benefits from an hour in a decanter before drinking, but age is being kind to it.

The 2003 Sociando-Mallet is drinking brilliantly, wafting from the glass with a deep bouquet of blackberry and cassis mingled with hints of loamy soil, cigar box and pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, layered and muscular, with a deep core of fruit, impressively lively acids and ample reserves of rich, powdery tannin, it is one of the real successes of the vintage. It's also one of the most youthful-tasting 2003s you can find today.

A striking minerality, copious quantities of black currants and plums,
along with some dried herbs jump from the glass of this tannic,
structured, somewhat severe but large-scaled, muscular wine that oozes
testosterone. Virile, structured, and perhaps too tannic for its own
good, but impressively built, pure, and a wine to admire (rather than
possibly enjoy), this large-scaled 2002 requires 7-10 years of cellaring.
Anticipated maturity: 2013-2025+?. -

A classic Sociando-Mallet, this wine boasts a saturated purple color, as well as an intense nose of cassis liqueur, chocolate, and minerals. Dense and medium-bodied, with outstanding purity, and high tannin, this beautifully made wine is better than many classified growths. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020.
