The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Village offers up aromas of sweet red berries, cherries, spices and dark chocolate, followed by a medium-bodied, lively and vibrant palate that's bright and fine-boned.
The Trapet renaissance continues, and that's confirmed by a fine set of 2022s at this Gevrey-Chambertin reference point. As readers will remember, there have been a host of changes at this address in recent years: in 2020, fully seven hectares of the domaine's holdings were converted both to échalas and to higher trellising stakes and wires, depending on the steepness of the slope. Since then, changes have been rolled out in other parcels too. Given the extent of Trapet's holdings in prime climats, that means that the walk from Morey-Saint-Denis to Gevrey-Chambertin suddenly looks rather different. In the cuverie, winemaking continues to be very classical, with important percentages of whole clusters. There are more smaller cuvées too, including a Gevrey-Chambertin 1859, from old vines in lieu-dit Champerrier, as well as separate bottlings for the domaine's premiers crus that were formerly blended together.

The 2022 Chambertin Grand Cru is another terrific wine from Trapet, unfurling in the glass with deep aromas of plums, cherries and sweet berries mingled with hints of warm spices, rose petals and coniferous forest floor. Full-bodied, ample and satiny, it's seamless and complete, with a layered core of fruit framed by sweet, powdery tannins. It's as impressive for its harmony as it is for its plenitude.

One of the Trapet family's historic holdings, the 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru En Ergot derives from a parcel acquired in the 1880s (during the phylloxera crisis, it sold for the lofty sum of 400 Francs per barrel) that's the continuation of premier cru Petite Chapelle but with deeper soils. Revealing aromas of cassis, sweet plums, orange zest and spices, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with a textural, gourmand profile and powdery tannins that assert themselves on the finish.

The 2019 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Capita is the usual blend of fruit
from the premiers crus En Ergot, Corbeaux and Combottes, supplemented by
a visual selection of small-berried clusters from Petite Chapelle and
Clos Prieur, though Trapet notes that this may be the cuvee's swan song,
as his sons are keen to vinify these parcels separately. Wafting from
the glass with scents of cassis, dark berries, peonies, raw cocoa and
spices, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, with terrific
concentration, lively acids and an elegantly complete profile.
Concentrated but beautifully refined, it's a fabulous wine in the making.
