Over the last five years, as these high density plantings (which date to 2014) mature, this cuvée has made the most progress of any wine in the range, and the 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chaumées only confirms that. Unwinding in the glass with notes of pear, sweet citrus oil, toasted hazelnuts, white flowers and iodine, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and textural, with a cool core of fruit, racy acids and a long, mineral finish.
Olivier Lamy and his vines appear to have handled the 2022 growing season admirably, despite the hydric deficit and warm conditions. This is an estate whose wines have generally demanded a bit of patience out of the gates, yet the 2022s are especially charming, exhibiting a youthful expressiveness and sense effortless this year that makes them especially appealing. Bottling under Diam 30, with concomitantly somewhat lower levels of free sulfites, surely has something to do with it. But it's probably also simply the result of over two decades' work coming together in a seamless synthesis. Whether it's cutting-edge viticulture, including plantings at over 20,000 vines per hectare and unhedged canopies; extended maturation on the lees, which now amounts to 24 months in total, 23 of those in largely neutral wood; obsessive attention to closures and bottling practices; or a host of other small details that, cumulatively, make the difference between the best and the rest, Lamy has spared nothing to get to where he is today. While his ultra-rare Haute Densité bottlings are now almost impossible to source, readers will still find it easy to secure his more modest cuvées. Everything here comes warmly recommended.

This is a specially strong rendition of this bottling, produced from massal selections planted at 14,000 vines per hectare.

Planted at 20,000 vines per hectare but not yet deemed mature enough to merit the "Haute Densité" moniker on the label, Lamy's 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chaumées is his best to date from this site, bursting with aromas of pear, citrus zest, smoke and freshly baked bread. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and layered, it's deep and concentrated, with racy acids, chalky structuring extract and a long, saline finish.

The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Macherelles reveals aromas of pear, orange oil, white flowers, nutmeg, beeswax and peach. Medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, it's a fleshy, generous wine with good energy and precision, even if it can't match the tension and intensity of the top Saint-Aubin cuvées at this address.

The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Le Concis du Champs has turned out very well indeed, exhibiting aromas of crisp orchard fruit, fresh peach, orange zest and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, ample and layered, it's concentrated and fleshy, with serious structure and depth—which won't surprise anyone who saw the small, open clusters with thick skins that Lamy harvested in this parcel in 2020.
