    ピノ ノワール種100%。「シャンパン」とは「傾斜の畑」という意味で、文字通り地表がきれいな曲面を描いている畑です。樹齢は約35年で東西に伸びる2つの区画を所有しており、広さは約4haになります。ヴォルネーの1級の中では赤土が多く、痩せた区画で低地では砂利が多い粘土質で高地になるにつれて岩肌が露わになりゴツゴツした石灰質土壌になります。石灰質土壌からくる繊細さとミネラル風味、粘土質からくる力強さとボリュームの調和が取れていてヴォルネーのキャラクターを1番良く表現しているワインです。

    ピノ ノワール種100%。当ドメーヌの醸造所に隣接する単独所有畑で中世にはブルゴーニュ公が所有していた区画。塀に囲まれた畑の広さは2.15haで樹齢は古いもので65年にもなり、樹齢ごとに4つのエリアに分けられています。鉄分をあまり含まない石灰質泥灰土壌で水はけが良く、東～南東向きの畑はとても日当たりが良いので成熟した葡萄が収穫出来ます。エレガントで様々な要素が感じられ、ヴォルネーの中でもボリュームのあるエネルギッシュで長熟タイプのワインです。

    The 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiet offers up notes of sweet berries, cherries, rose petals, raw cocoa and warm spices. Medium to full-bodied, bright and velvety, it's deep and concentrated, with powdery tannins and lively acids. As usual, this is a touch more structured than Les Angles, though it's far from forbidding.

    Readers will have a fun time debating the relative merits of d'Angerville's 2018, 2019 and 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs in 20 years' time, as for now it is a very close-run thing. The 2020 is certainly superb, wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet cherries, plums and berries mingled with spices, orange zest, peony and discreet hints of oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and seamless palate that's bright, elegant and rich but refined. Of the trio, it's probably the 2020 that carries the sunshine and warmth of the vintage the most lightly, even though the year was, on paper, the most extreme.

    Offering up lovely aromas of sweet berry fruit, plums, orange rind, raw cocoa and spices, the 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiet is medium to full-bodied, bright and mineral, with a firmer, more tightly wound profile than the gourmand, enveloping Clos des Angles, concluding with a saline finish. It's a touch more refined and ethereal than the 2018, but like that wine, it's built to age.

    The 2016 Volnay 1er Cru Fremiets is also showing very well, wafting from the glass with a lovely bouquet of dark berries, raw cocoa, orange rind, forest floor and dried flowers. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, having come together beautifully since I tasted it from barrel, framed by juicy acids and fine, stony tannins. It's a superb wine that confirms the serious stature of this vintage chez d'Angerville.
