The 2013 Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru les Vaucrains has a succinct, mineral-driven bouquet with wet limestone intermixed with red cherries, orange blossom and a touch of apricot jam. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins: pure red cherry and strawberry fruit, a silver thread of acidity and just a dab of spice lending another dimension toward the finish. This nudges the Les Saint Georges ’13 as Chevillon’s best wine.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains 2011 has a rather subdued bouquet at the moment despite vigorous coaxing. There is clearly a lot of stem addition here rendering the nose rather vegetal. The palate is medium-bodied with gently grippy tannins and here the greenness is less conspicuous, the finish fresh, classic, a little lean, but nicely focused. I think that leanness will sort itself out with three or four years in bottle.

The 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Saint-Georges is also showing brilliantly, mingling aromas of dark berry fruit, plums and cherries with nuances of baking chocolate, rich soil tones and subtle carnal nuances. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, rich and muscular, with real concentration and substance. This is a lively, sapid, broad-shouldered Les Saint-Georges that will be very long lived.

As usual, the 2017 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains is the most structured, tight-knit wine in the Chevillon cellar, unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis, dark chocolate and rich soil, framed by smoky new oak. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied, richly tannic and concentrated, with imposingly broad shouldered structure and a deep, reserved core. Again, patience will be required and rewarded.
