The old-vine 2020 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru Cuvée MCMLV mingles aromas of cassis and wild berries with hints of licorice, black truffle, loamy soil and toasty new oak. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's deep and vibrant. It's more intense and finer-boned than the ampler, richer regular bottling. Both, however, are playing at a very high level.

Aromas of dark berries, baking chocolate, forest floor, spices and plums introduce the 2020 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, a full-bodied, layered and multidimensional wine that's deep and concentrated, with lively acids, ripe tannins and a long, saline finish. Still primary after a year's élevage, it's built to age.

The 2019 Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru (négoce) opens with aromas of rose petals, plums, red berries, raw cocoa and sweet spices. Medium to full-bodied, supple and charming, it's open-knit and giving, with melting tannins, lively acids and a saline finish. As I've written before, the Mercier family's parcel of Griotte-Chambertin is leased to both Ponsot and Leclerc in metayage, some of which the Merciers take in grapes and sell to Laurent Lignier.

Deeper and more structured than the Griotte, Lignier's 2019 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru unwinds in the glass with notes of blackcurrants, cherries, sweet soil tones, wilted rose petals and spices. Medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, it's ample and voluminous, with velvety tannins, succulent acids and a broad, expansive finish.

From a higher-altitude site located in a former quarry, Lignier's 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Chaffots unwinds in the glass with aromas of earthy wild berries, cherries, licorice and warm spices. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, it's lively and precise, with a more tightly wound, lower-pH profile than the Riotte.

The king of the cellar, Lignier's 2017 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru is superb, wafting from the glass with a complex bouquet of red and black cherries, cassis, warm spices, incense and grilled game bird. On the
palate, the wine is full-bodied, layered and complete with striking depth and dimension, rich but satiny structuring tannins and excellent structural tension at the core, concluding with a long and penetrating
finish. It's a magical wine that will merit ardent pursuit when it's released next year.

The 2016 Morey St Denis 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes, which comes from vines planted as far back as the 1930s, suffered a lot of millerandage so that the yields was 25 hectoliters per hectare. It is matured one-third new oak and one-third whole bunch fruit. It has an introspective bouquet at first and then gradually unfolds to reveal enticing blackberry, briary and cold stone scents-all very sophisticated and poised. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannin, a disarming sense of symmetry and tension that impart weightlessness that run paradoxically to the intensity of fruit. This is just a magnificent Morey-Saint-Denis. Top of the class in grand cru territory.

The 2015 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru les Chaffots, located just up from Clos Saint-Denis, has an expressive bouquet with ebullient red cherries, crushed strawberry and subtle undergrowth scents, the 20% whole bunch fruit neatly entwined and barely noticeable. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, a crisp line of acidity that binds together an elegant yet powerful finish that linger long in the mouth. I would wager that there can be few premier cru wines from Morey-Saint-Denis better than this gem.

The 2015 Morey St Denis 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes is a wonderful rendition of this reliably superb cuvée—which hails from old vines in Faconnières and Chenevery that always produce very small, shot berries. The wine offers up a bouquet of red and black fruits, dark soil tones, raw cocoa and pencil lead, gently framed by new oak. On the palate, it's full-bodied and multidimensional, with a deep core of fruit and excellent sappy energy that carries through the long finish. Its tannins are beautifully cloaked in fruit. The Ligniers call this their baby Clos de la Roche and it’s easy to see why.

The 2013 Morey St Denis 1er Cru les Chaffots, which Laurent explained receives a little more sunshine since it faces southwest, but also retains good levels of acidity, underwent maturation in one-third new oak. There was a touch of reduction on the nose but the palate is succulent and fleshy on the entry, the acidity nice judged and it is bridled with a sense of composure and refinement on the mineral-laden and structured finish reminiscent of Clos Saint Denis just over the road. Superb.

Lignier's 2018 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes is medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, with a deep and textural core, lively acids and a long, mineral finish. Serious and elegantly muscular, this is a long-haul proposition, and I will be adding some to my own cellar.

Revisited in bottle, Lignier's 2018 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru lives up
to its fine performance in barrel, wafting from the glass with aromas of dark berries, cherries and orange rind mingled with truffle, espresso roast, loamy soil and dark chocolate. Full-bodied, concentrated and seamless, it's layered and vibrant, with a deep core of pure fruit that largely conceals impressive reserves of fine, powdery tannins. Concluding with a long and saline finish, it will merit and reward at least a dozen years' patience, likely hitting its stride around age 20.

The 2017 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Vieilles Vignes is superb, wafting from the glass with a complex bouquet of warm spices, raspberries, cherries, dark chocolate and candied peel. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, layered and textural, with the most depth and dimension of Lignier's premiers crus, its deep core of fruit largely concealing the wine's fine-grained structuring tannins, concluding with a saline finish. This cuvee hails from a parcel that straddles the climats Faconnieres and Chenevery that was planted in 1936, 1942 and
1943, and which the Lignier family has always vinified as a single cuvee.

The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes comes from a parcel just south of Clos de la Roche that was planted in 1957. It has a very subtle bouquet at first, gradually unfurling to reveal vibrant red berry fruit, fern, iris and bay leaf scents, later just a distant tang of iron rust. The palate is medium-bodied, the one-third whole-bunch fruit beautifully subsumed into the fabric of this Gevrey with a supple, quite fleshy finish belying the backbone underneath. Superb.

The 2015 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Aux Combottes has a tightly wound bouquet with crisp red berry fruit, wet limestone and flinty scents that are subtle at first but unfurl with just a few swirls of the glass. This has a sophisticated bouquet that keeps you engaged from first encounter. The palate is beautifully defined with superb mineralite, a little edginess developing towards the finish that shimmers with nervosite. The small amount of whole bunch fruit allows the terroir to really shine through here. This is superb and it will offer 20+ years of drinking leasure (though I personally would afford it 3-5 years in bottle).
