At fully 16.2% alcohol, the 2019 Echézeaux Grand Cru is the highest-octane wine in the Rouget cellar, and it wasn't all that put together when I tased it, offering up aromas of crème de cassis, plum preserve, rich spices and creamy new oak. Full-bodied, massive and powerful, it's generous and dramatic, with abundant reserves of powdery tannin and a long, heady finish. Given that Rouget felt the wine was a bit out of sorts when I visited, and struggling to make sense of its extreme profile this year, I'll refrain from offering a score.
